Last Wednesday of the Month

Chaosradio is a somewhat traditional monthly talk radio show that deals with nerd news, politics around computers and internet and whatever is going on in the Turing world. This Wednesday you can tune in again to hear excellent experts to discuss modern communication platforms and related issues. :}

Don't miss it tonight at 10 p.m.: discuss the coming "twitter democracy" on Chaosradio with Tim and hukl. This call-in radio show is streaming on the internet as well as being podcasted, click here if you want to listen to it (and if you understand German). Chasoradio is also broadcast on Radio Fritz.

Sign!

It is even slashdotted today: clandestine internet censorship filters are planned in Germany and will be implemented if the new law will pass the Parliament. The goverment tries so far to ignore the huge outcry from the internet public, various initiatives, opposition parties, and others who have all slammed the idea as completely ineffective but dangerous. Internet filters are wrong because they impact on academic research and education, business competition, media freedom, and fundamental rights guaranteed by our constitution. And therefore the plan needs to stop immediately.

Well, the internet is becoming a very dangerous tool for those in power, because it is providing an opportunity for independent information. And it is a tool for participation: A petition against the legislation and against the secret blocking of websites placed on the German parliament's website of the Committee on Petitions will end at midnight. Until now, the petition reached more than 130,000 signatures. Please sign the petition, you don't need to be a German citizen. You have four hours left.

Here Be Dragons

An early Call for Participation for 26c3 was somewhat unofficially been put up some days ago. As usual, the Chaos Computer Club's awesome annual meeting will be held in Berlin, December 27th-30th, 2009. If you're coming into Berlin in December, why not maybe come in a day early, or if you live near Berlin and you are interested in making the 26c3 the best Chaos Communication Congress ever, why not helping us? There are many ways to contribute to 26c3, but the best way is to do a talk. Spread the word!

Bringing together 4000+ hackers and associated life forms, we're always very open to talks and topics ideas, but I wouldn't wait too long to submit. Some hints: Please, read the instructions for the CfP before submitting and make sure your abstracts are descriptively tuned and in whole sentences, because there are at least a dozen people that you have to convince to write a positive review for your talk.

Wikipedia Fashion

We don't have too many things to cheer about when it comes to ethical behavior and plagiarism in schools and universities. But nevertheless this trumpeting the lack of ethics made me laugh today.

Don't try to be neutral about this growing problem, it isn't actually possible. Just because blushless copy and paste happens (and not only from Wikipedia), doesn't mean it's okay. And credibility is not so easily recovered. Well, I'm tempted to purchase it as a shirt just to see the confused look on my student's face when I'd wear it in the ethics class. :}
